The cancellation has come as the election officials are now busy with a country-wide scrutiny of nominations filed for the Dec 30 polls in 235 municipalities. Sarwarul Abedin was the BNP-nominated mayor candidate for the Chhengarchar Municipality. Officials said his nomination was cancelled due to ‘discrepancies’ in documents he submitted. “He did not submit documents of educational qualification and his income tax returns. His national ID says he is a graduate but he claimed clearing the SSC (school-leaving exams),” Assistant Returning Officer Quazi Hekmat Ali told reporters. Abedin said that he would appeal against the decision. “I have submitted all the necessary documents and in a proper manner,” he told reporters. FE
